beltway. scott broom is in our newsroom. he has more details. is everyone okay? >> reporter: the good news is the mother and child who amounted to hostages in this situation are doing fine. this all began last night when a woman was getting gas in a station in baltimore. police say that's when this man 22-year-old terron alvin white jumped in the vehicle and took off. you can see him there. according to witnesses at the scene, he hit at least one car as he was speeding away. that's with a mother and child in the vehicle. then about 20 minutes later, while white sideswiped a maryland state trooper vehicle, officials say the trooper immediately turned on his emergency lights and siren. he headed southbound on i95 chasing after this reckless driver with the hostages inside. police say white was swerving erratically across four lanes of traffic. . >> the mother was holding on to the infant as they exited the

vehicle. fortunately, there was no traffic around. i mean, this incident could have been much worse than it was. >> reporter: all right. there is white again . the mother and baby rolled out of the vehicle as he slowed down on the beltway. the mother and child are fine. it happened just past the cabin john parkway. so far police say white has been charged with multiple traffic violations, including lewding police, hit and run, bribing, more charges are pending against this man. we'll have an update later today. reporting live from the newsroom, scott broom, 9news now. >> all right. thank you very much, scott. we now have breaking news to tell you about. the judge presiding over roger clemons perjury trial has just declared a mistrial. u.s. district judge reggie walton scoldeled prosecutors -- scolded prosecutors twice for not concealing evidence. it has put the whole case at

risk. the problem could have been fixed by telling the jury to disregard the evidence. clemons was accused of lying to congress about his use of performance-enhancing drugs. president obama is warning republicans do not call his bluff as the debate over the debt becomes more intense. once again lawmakers are working with the president. they're trying to get a deal done. danielle has details. >> reporter: president obama sits back down with republicans to debate the debt after negotiations got testy. health majority leader said when he pressed the president "got very agitated and said that he has sat here long enough". the the president shoved back his chair and walked out. the democratic aids deny the president stormed out saying "the president finished the meeting by speaking for several

minutes about how he would not be deterred in doing what is best for the country". harry reid is calling the behavior childish. >> the house majority leader shows he shouldn't even be at the table. >> reporter: lawmakers have to meet an august 2nd deadline but republicans say they won't bow to pressure. >> they gave us three bad choices. higher taxes, smoking mirrors or default. >> reporter: with a small but rising risk that the government will default on its debt, they put bond rating under review for a downgrade. if they were to lower the ratings, it would have a big impact on the economy pushing up rates for mortgages, car loans and other debt. defaulting would be catastrophic. >> it would create a very severe financial shock that would have effects not only on the u.s. economy but the global economy. >> reporter: the president was demanding bots find common ground by tomorrow, but it looks like talks could extend into the

weekend. danielle noddingham, cbs news. >> the white house has been lowering spending cuts offering less than $1.4 trillion over ten years. mostly in domestic and defense spending. with just 19 days to go, wall street is chiming in telling lawmakers to get a deal done. jessica has more on that part of the debt dealing debate. >> reporter: lawmakers in washington are facing fresh pressure to make a deal as the president meets again with members of congress at the white house, wall street is growing increasingly worried that a plan won't come together in time. late yesterday, they moved a step closer to an unprecedented downgrade of the u.s.'s debt citing a possibility that both sides of the aisle won't be able to come together on a deal. comments are very much in focus

on capitol hill. they're back today this time talking to senators. a day after members of the house were put on notice that short and long-term solutions need to be found for our nation's debt problem. >> we need both an increase in the debt limit that will prevent us from faulting on obligations that have already occurred and will create tremendous problems for our financial system and our economy, but we also need to take a serious attack on the unsustainability of our fiscal position. >> reporter: in the meantime, some republicans are accusing the president of using scare tactics in the debate. >> president obama quit lying. you know darn well that if august 2nd comes and goes, there is plenty of money to pay off our debt and cover all of our social security obligations. >> reporter: the white house is trying to answer concerns that social security checks would stop if a deal isn't reached. >> social security isn't a contributor to our short and medium term debt problem.

called to testify. the obama administration is speaking out against congressional efforts to restrict certain funding in dc. yesterday the white house released a statement opposing a bill that pulls funding for the city's needle exchange program and abortion for poor women. the administration says that if passed, the legislation would undermine the city's home rule. it also noted that such funding is allowed in other cities. the son of dc council member marion barry says that he will speak publicly after his next court appearance. christopher barry is charged with drug possession. the charges stem from a domestic dispute complaint back in may. court documents show that the 31-year-old was allegedly found near a table with five bags of marijuana and a vile of pcp. police say that barry jumped out

a window and tried to run away before he was arrested. christopher barry is due back in court on july 27th. it seems there was nothing unusual about the dc police escort for actor charlie sheen. that according to a report from the district's inspector general. in april, sheen tweeted photos of his car's speedometer registering over 80 miles an hour, as dc police escorted him from dulles airport to a performance at constitution hall. at the time the police chief said that that escort violated department protocol. well, dc now has an official cocktail. today counsel member jack evans will read a proclamation declaring the ricky as the city's drink. the cocktail is made with gin or whiskey, fresh lime juice and

well, harry potter fever is taking over because people are already camping out in front of the uptown theater in cleveland park. they're waiting for tonight's premiere. at midnight the 8th and final movie in the series will be released. harry potter and the deathly halos part ii has already earned $32 million through advanced sales. the emmy nominations are out and mad men is leading the pack with 19 bids. of the tv series, it's up for best drama and best actress and actor in a drama. other big winners, era drama -- i think that's boardwalk empire. the sit come modern family and saturday night live. the ceremony is scheduled to air on september 18th. >> that's great shoes. love mad men. >> you liked it? >> yes, it's fun.

annapolis. martinsburg 78. cumberland 79. so much better compared to 90s at this hour just yesterday. dew points, this is why it feels so much better. 60s and 70s a couple days ago. little stickier and warmer in fredericksburg. look at hagerstown. you're down to 44 for a dew point. so it does feel really nice outside. no reason you can't get out and get that run in or take the dog out for a nice extra long walk. so warm today but not humid. open your windows tonight because you want to give your ac a break. i think you can do that. friday looks fantastic. again, the weekend is a bit warmer, but still really nice. our future cast, pretty uneventful because of the high pressure in place. that's going to keep us dry the next few days. we got some good showers yesterday, so the launch should be okay. maybe a few clouds moving in tomorrow but they're going to be high level clouds.

not holding any rain. highs today around mid 80s for downtown. 82 in annapolis. 86 for culpeper and fredericksburg 84. we should be in the upper 80s. overnight back into the 60s. so nice and cool. 63 for gaithersburg and 62 in manassas. here is your next three days. so you loved today, you're going to love tomorrow. sunshine, 85. saturday just a smidge warmer at 87 degrees. here is your seven day out look. sunday warming into upper 80s. near 90 degrees. and then monday we have some clouds moving in into tuesday. tuesday we have a chance for some scattered showers and thunderstorms. and then wednesday maybe some isolated storms. but notice the temperatures do move back up. lower 90s by monday, tuesday and wednesday we're looking at 95 degrees. so the heat is back on by the beginning of your next work week. so you have to get outside and enjoy this beautiful weather. you have to get that good hike in. take the dog out. speaking of dogs, look what i've got here.

salt? >> well, it's our own blend. similar to other seasoning salts. >> morton's grilling seasoning which you can pick up at the restaurant. >> yes, yes. or any grocery store has seasoning salt similar. >> okay. and that's -- wow. turning it over. so it's real quick. >> yes. it's real quick. what we do is we have a little set up that i made with the beef stake tomatoes and purple onions. we'll put a nice little leaf of lettuce on the bottom to give it nice color. >> and we'll put that on. and then the blue cheese, i love blue cheese. >> so we're going to do tomato, onion, stake. >> oh, my goodness. >> tomato, onion, steak. >> so you cut them. >> yes. i slice them. >> this is the way you serve them and it's so thick. >> that's a big steak. >> all right. we have 30 seconds. and you put a little blue cheese on top. >> and the kicker is the knife right through there.
